Jacob, Chris and Ben discuss the serious topic of mental health and wellbeing in the industry. We cover Ben's personal journey, the perceptions of mental health, tips for businesses to implement change and individuals to handle the pressures of the industry, and what 'wellbeing by design' is all about.
Ben is an Associate at Assael Architecture, working as an architect and the head of research into design for wellbeing, author, TEDx speaker and mental wellbeing advocate, and has become a leading voice in designing for happiness and wellbeing. Ben's interest in mental health, wellbeing and happiness stems from suffering with anxiety problems in his mid-twenties. His book 'Happy by Design' followed after researching the relationship between buildings and happiness.
Ben works across teams at Assael Architecture to help embed wellbeing into all of their projects, as the practice considers it a vital element of successful design which plays a key role across all sectors.
In 2017, he co-founded the Architects’ Mental Wellbeing Forum, which is focused on improving mental health within the industry. Ben is also an accredited mindfulness practitioner with the Mindfulness Association and recently qualified as a WELL Accredited Professional.
